Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, recognising her inventive writing and reimagining of classical traditions. Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson is celebrated for works that cross poetry, prose and translation, including Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband and Nox. Her exploration of ancient Greek mythology through contemporary experiences has helped reshape modern literature. Carson becomes the 19th woman to receive the prestigious award. The 76-year-old author will formally receive her Nobel medal and diploma in Stockholm in December.
The academy cited Anne Carson’s ‘bold and inventive oeuvre’ in its awarding of the prize.
