The event marked the culmination of the 18th edition of the global art competition, celebrating the imagination, creativity, and dreams of Qatar’s young artists. The ceremony brought together over 500 participants from more than 200 schools across Qatar, along with their families, educators, and special guests, including celebrated Qatari athletes Ali Arshid and Cherif Younousse. A Canvas of Innovation and Hope The theme of the contest invited children to envision their “Dream Car”—a vehicle capable of making the world a better place. Submissions ranged from eco-friendly innovations and futuristic vehicles to designs that symbolised unity, compassion, and environmental consciousness. The contest was divided into three age categories: Three winners were chosen from each category and were recognised with certificates and exciting prizes during the event. Their artworks will now represent Qatar in the World Contest in Japan, where winners may receive prestigious accolades from Toyota Motor Corporation. Additionally, 25 finalists were acknowledged for their creativity, and three students were recognised in a special online voting competition hosted by Al Abdulghani Motors, giving the community a chance to support their favourite young artists. Inspiring the Next Generation with Qatari Champions Adding to the excitement, the event welcomed two of Qatar’s inspiring sports figures: The athletes engaged with students, shared stories of perseverance and discipline, and emphasised the importance of dreaming big—values that align with the spirit of the Dream Car Art Contest and Toyota’s global mission. “Our goal is to transform Qatar into a regional hub for healthcare”
In conversation with Manu G Parmar, Dr Saed Kaldari, CEO & founder of Surgi Art Hospital discusses a wide range of topics related to why he blended art in the name of the hospital, the goal of the facility and where he envisions it in two years’ time. BL: Talk us through your career path? Kaldari: I started my career as a physician. I graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1997. After that, I briefly returned home, only to leave again for Sweden to pursue a career in plastic surgery. I practised that for a while and eventually decided to come home in 2006. Before returning, I worked in Sweden at one of the university hospitals, where I held a locum consultant position, which I took on as I saw it would enhance my career. I worked for Hamad Medical Corporation at the start of my career for about 17 years. In 2014, I realised that I needed to focus on one thing, as I was managing both a private facility – a solo clinic from 2010 to 2013, and in 2013, I decided that this was not the way forward. I established a plastic surgery and dermatology centre in the Duhail area in 2014. With progress in this venture, I approached one of my friends in the business, the late Ibrahim Al Asmakh who was involved in real estate. Eventually with Al Asmakh and his partner, late Sheikh Khalid bin Nasser we expanded upon their hospitality, real estate (both commercial and residential), retail to add a healthcare unit, which I was assured, I would have complete control to execute it as I saw fit. In 2017, we signed the contract, marking the project’s official commencement and with efficient planning and budgeting, we offer our rooms at the same price as regular market rooms but with far superior services. It’s not about volume; we aim to introduce new, niche services. Our entire business model centres on providing specialised services and given the small market, investing in high-end technology and personnel locally is also challenging. Therefore, we promote our services to reach a wider geography, aligning with Qatar’s health tourism initiative. This initiative is gaining momentum, and we feel fortunate to be ready as it unfolds. The government is supporting the private sector in fostering growth, and we are proud to be part of this and help establish quality hospitals in Qatar. We can also attract specialised high-end practitioners worldwide, permanently or visiting. Our goal is to transform Qatar into a regional hub for healthcare, understanding and catering to our customers’ needs uniquely. We are optimistic about this continued success. BL: What made you think about this unique art and health care unison? Kaldari: Coming from a background in plastic surgery, you know you can’t help but think about the artistic application of medical science. It’s not just about plastic surgery; I realise that an orthopaedic surgeon, who cuts away at the correct angles, is an artist of sorts. I believe those who perform other types of surgery also have their own crafts. It’s a mix of knowledge and skill, both essential for success. There is artistry in it. I think this is where the name derives from: the artistry in providing care. The main idea is that when you walk in, you’ll notice one thing that’s different about this building. I was involved from an architectural perspective, including the layout and all the blueprints from day one. I faced a huge challenge trying to convince architects and engineers who were pushing for standard building concepts that this was not the direction I wanted to take. This is about the feel, more than anything else. You will notice when you walk around the hospital that there is a unique flow to the space. This flow is noticeable to anyone who passes by our facility; they feel an airy quality here, something flowing. There are many studies worldwide showing that you eat better in a pleasant environment, which I think is an important part of the services we provide. BL: Doha has quite a few upscale, modern hospitals. What do you think you will offer that will set the hospital apart? Kaldari: We have a medical background and have developed organically, not from a business perspective. Our goal is to expand into the health sector, a commitment my partners and I agreed upon from the start. This sector is unique because it requires a blend of skills. Running such a venture demands not just medical management but also sound business acumen to ensure feasibility. Merging these competencies is challenging, as it ultimately provides a different type of service. BL: What are the 5 USPs of this hospital? Kaldari: We have recently launched a uniquely designed medical facility in Qatar. The hospital features distinct architectural themes, creating a unique flow throughout the building as patients experience its services. We stand out by implementing the concept of a boutique hospital. While we function primarily as a surgical facility with ancillary medical services, we also provide general medical care with a strong emphasis on surgery. Our foremost department will be plastic surgery, alongside general surgery. Soon, we will include orthopaedic surgery, ENT, dermatology, obstetrics and gynaecology, and more specialities to come. Our state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities include laboratories and radiological testing. We have established collaborations with experts from North America, Europe, and even Asia to bring their services to Qatar, benefiting not only our local population but the entire region as well. BL: Medical insurance is a crucial success factor for a hospital’s success. What kind of insurance tie-ups have you done for the hospital? Kaldari: We have connected with all major insurance providers in Qatar and are now in the negotiation stage. As you know, the medical insurance sector in Qatar still has a long way to go in terms of development. It’s not operating optimally, and I believe it requires more governance. Published in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics, the study titled “Near-complete Middle Eastern genomes refine autozygosity and enhance disease-causing and population-specific variant discovery” presents the first near-complete genome assemblies from the region. Leveraging long-read sequencing and de novo genome assembly, the research reveals new pathways to understand and resolve complex, undiagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders affecting families in Qatar, Sudan, Jordan, Syria, and Afghanistan. A New Era for Middle Eastern Genomics and Rare Disease Diagnosis The study provides a critical reference resource for the Middle East, filling major gaps in global genomic databases and offering a transformative tool for identifying disease-causing genetic variants. WCM-Q students gain real-world exposure to Qatar’s healthcare system
Doha – March 18, 2025: Seventeen students from Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar’s (WCM-Q) foundation and pre-medical programs participated in the 2024-2025 Pre-Medical Observership Program. The program provides students with valuable exposure to the healthcare system in Qatar and the daily practices of medical professionals. It allows them to explore the different medical specialties and career options available. The students spent two weeks of their winter break at affiliate hospitals Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Sidra Medicine, where they shadowed physicians during their daily rounds in various clinics, including obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, internal medicine, emergency, and trauma. They also observed doctor-patient interactions and listened to doctors’ discussions of cases, diagnoses, and potential treatment plans. An additional observation opportunity was exclusively offered to foundation students, who spent a week at Sidra Medicine as part of their English language course. The 19 participating students combined classroom knowledge with observations of hands-on clinical experiences. Their observations focused on themes such as professionalism, teamwork, and professional identity, with each hospital visit centered around a specific theme. Commenting on his experience, pre-medical student Abdulaziz Al-Hardan said: “I gained valuable insights into patient care, clinical decision-making, and the realities of working in a fast-paced medical environment. Witnessing a variety of intricate medical situations helped me appreciate the value of teamwork, empathy, and communication in the medical field.” This passion for medicine was echoed by fellow students Noof Al-Malik and Jassim Al-Hail from the foundation program. Al-Malik said: “As a foundation student, it’s easy to lose sight of the end goal while being preoccupied with studying. This program reminded me of my love for the profession and reignited my determination to work hard to achieve my goals.” Al-Hail added: “The days that had the most significant impact on me were spent in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU). We not only observed the meticulous work of the doctors and their team of residents while treating patients suffering from brain trauma, but we also learned invaluable lessons about life, religion, and the art of medicine.” Upon completing the observership, the students submitted reflective essays and received certificates of participation. Dr. Rachid Bendriss, associate dean for foundation, student outreach and educational development programs, said: “We are committed to providing our foundation and pre-medical students with the opportunity to gain firsthand experience of what practicing physicians face during their daily rotations. High school students glimpse potential of a career in medicine at WCM-Q
Doha – March 16, 2025: Thirty-three high school students spent a week at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) discovering careers in medicine during the winter session of the Qatar Medical Explorer Program (QMEP). QMEP, an immersive enrichment program offered by WCM-Q’s Office of Student Outreach & Educational Development, provides a snapshot of life as a student at WCM-Q and detailed information about careers in medicine. The program is open to grade 10 and 11 students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a particular aptitude for the sciences and mathematics. During the weeklong program, the high school students took part in a carefully designed series of sessions designed to accurately reproduce the experiences of current WCM-Q students, with classes in biology, chemistry, anatomy, surgery, and research. There was also a presentation on the life of a practicing physician by a member of the WCM-Q faculty, plus opportunities to meet admissions officers, icebreaker sessions, and a mock admissions interview to help the students prepare for applying to college. The students also experienced practical classes in WCM-Q’s state-of-the-art Clinical Skills and Simulation Lab, before giving an oral presentation of a research project to their peers and WCM-Q faculty on the penultimate day of the program. On the evening of final day, the high school students were invited to join current WCM-Q students, faculty and staff for International Night, which celebrates the cultural diversity of the college community. Noha Saleh, director of premedical administration, student outreach and educational development, said: “QMEP is designed to give a very accurate impression to high school students of what life as a WCM-Q student is like and a clear understanding of what a career in science will entail. We are very happy to provide this chance for students to explore WCM-Q and we are certain that a great many of this year’s cohort left feeling very inspired about pursuing a career in medicine.” WCM-Q also runs QMEP sessions in the summer to provide more opportunities for students to explore careers in medicine. Entry to the program is based upon academic performance and nominations from high school counselors and teachers. Dr. Rachid Bendriss, professor of English as a second language, assistant professor of education in medicine, and associate dean for foundation, student outreach and educational development programs, said: “QMEP allows high school students with an interest in the sciences and good academic performance the chance to glimpse all that a career in medicine has to offer, as well as allowing them to explore WCM-Q’s state-of-the-art facilities and world-class levels of teaching. We hope that many of the inquisitive, intelligent and hardworking students who visited us during this session of QMEP will choose to join WCM-Q and go on to serve their communities as physicians, researchers, and educators.”
